Step 3: Your Hand

In both cases, you receive five cards on the deal and decide which cards you want to be part of your final hand. - Three of a kind

- Straight flush (straight with five cards of same suit)
- Royal flush (ten, jack, queen, king and ace of the same suit)
The hands at the top of the list will come up often during game play but don’t pay back very much. Toward the bottom of the list are hands that won’t come up much at all during an average video poker session but pay back the most. To put it simply, the rarer the hand, the more it will pay.
When you make your wager and press the “deal” button, five cards will appear on the screen. Your chances of receiving any individual card in a hand are the same as if you were playing with a standard deck of 52. Software inside the machine makes sure of that by constantly shuffling the cards until someone hits the “deal” button, at which point the top five cards in the deck appear.
When you see these five cards, you have to see if you’re close to any of the winning combinations listed above. You might even be lucky enough to have one of those winning hands right off the bat. There might also be deals where you don’t have anything resembling a winning combination.
In any case, you have to decide what to hold and discard out of the five-card deal. The cards you hold will be a part of your final five-card hand, which means you should make sure they’re valuable to you.
Meanwhile, the cards that you discard will be replaced by others from the deck on the draw. The deck for the draw will contain 47 cards: the original 52 minus the five you were dealt. That means you can’t get any of the cards you discard back in your final hand.
You have to make your choices based on your changes of receiving a winning hand. But you should also be thinking about how much each potential winning hand pays. In some cases, you might want to reach for a high-paying hand even if it will take a very lucky draw to achieve it.
It comes down to risk versus reward. Once you’ve weighed all of this and made your decision, you’ll press the buttons corresponding to the cards you want to hold. You’ll then hit the “draw” button, which will replace your discarded cards to finish the hand.

You have to make your decisions about what to hold and what to discard as you always would. Meanwhile, 50 draw decks containing the 47 cards remaining after the deal will be randomly shuffled while you make that decision. Even though these decks contain the same cards, the draw for each will be random.
Keep in mind that you’ll have the chance of receiving the same card in multiple draws. In fact, playing 50 hands at once, there’s a pretty good chance that a single card might show up in many of your final hands.
Let’s take a look at how all of this might play out. Imagine that you received the following five-card deal during a round of Fifty Play Poker video poker:
You now have to make your decision about what to hold and what to discard. This decision will then be repeated for all of the hands in your Fifty Play Poker video poker. Even though none of the cards form a winning combination in that deal, there are several possibilities going forward into the draw which hold some promise.
You can keep the pair of fives and hope for two pair, three of a kind, a full house, or even four of a kind. If you keep the five through eight (dropping one of the fives), you’d need to draw a four or nine for a straight. Or you might hold the five, six, and seven of hearts, which opens up the widest range of winning hands but requires a precise two-card draw to attain them.
Let’s say for the sake of argument that you hold onto the pair of fives. When you do, those two cards will appear in the same position in all 50 of your hands. The other three cards in each hand will come from a draw from a separate deck.
How might that play out? Well, you could end up with the following results.
- 7 Two pair
- 5 Three of a kind
- 2 Full house
- 1 Four of a kind
Let’s assume that you bet five coins per hand, as we recommended, and played a Jacks or Better pay table. That would leave you with the following payouts for those hands:
- Two pair (10 coins) times 7 = 70 coins
- Three of a kind (15 coins) times 5 = 75 coins
- Full house (45 coins) times 2 = 90 coins
- Four of a kind (125 coins) times 1 = 125 coins
The sum of those winnings comes to 360 coins. Minus the 250 that you wagered, you ended up with a 110-coin profit.
This example shows you how well Fifty Play Poker video poker can pay off. The deal was good enough to set you up for at least a break-even situation. By ending up with just a single four of a kind out of 50 chances to draw it, you came away with a nice profit.
Now, imagine what might have happened if you came away with a winning combination on the deal. Assuming it was one you wanted to hold onto headed into the draw, you would have been guaranteed 50 winning hands. If you improved a few of those into high-paying territory, you could really score.
