Jimmy Garoppolo arrived in the Bay Area to plenty of fanfare when the 49ers acquired him from New England in the middle of the 2017 season. Jimmy played just a few games that season, but the Niners apparently saw enough to make him the most well-compensated quarterback of all time the following February. Garoppolo put pen to paper on a five-year deal worth up to $137.5 million.
He tore his ACL in his first year after signing the new deal. But last year, he led the team to the Super Bowl in his first full campaign. Across 16 games last season, the Eastern Illinois product completed over 69% of his attempts for 3,978 yards with 27 touchdowns to 13 interceptions.
While Garoppolo put together a solid individual season, the 49ers were so dominant because of their stellar defense and their ability to consistently run the ball with success. Garoppolo is better than your classic “game manager,” but his role with this offense isn’t too complicated. He generally has to avoid making mistakes while allowing the run game to do its thing.
The Niners traded Matt Breida to Miami over the offseason, but the team still has a three-pronged rushing attack featuring Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman, and Jerick McKinnon. Assuming it continues to work, we can safely expect Garoppolo’s job to remain the same heading into 2020. He has a very reliable weapon at tight end with George Kittle, but the rest of the receiving corps is a bit underwhelming. Garoppolo is having to rely on unproven young receivers like Brandon Aiyuk, Kendrick Bourne, and Dante Pettis.
While we likely won’t see the San Francisco offense set many records for aerial prowess, there’s a reason this team is still considered the odds-on favorite to get out of the NFC. Garoppolo’s steady presence is a big part of the 49ers’ overall outlook.
Don’t Forget These Players When Betting on the 49ers
Nick Bosa wasted little time in asserting himself as one of the game’s best defenders last season. As a rookie, the former Ohio State Buckeye recorded nine sacks with two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, and an interception. Those numbers were good enough to earn him Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, and he was one of the main reasons for San Francisco’s rapid improvement from 2018 to 2024 on the defensive side of the ball.
Obviously, expectations for Bosa are high heading into his second pro campaign. He opens the season with the third-best odds to win Defensive Player of the Year of any defender. Only Aaron Donald (+750) and Khalil Mack (+1100) start 2020 with odds better than Bosa’s (+1300). For good measure, brother Joey Bosa isn’t too far behind at +2500.
George Kittle is right there with Travis Kelce in the discussion for the best tight end in the game today. Kelce and the Chiefs may have gotten the better of Kittle and the 49ers in Super Bowl 54, but Kittle has put up massive numbers over the past couple of years. In his 2018 breakout campaign, he racked up 88 catches for 1,377 yards with five touchdowns. Last year, with Garoppolo at the helm, Kittle finished with 85 catches for 1,053 yards and five scores. He did that while missing two games due to injury as well.
If the 49ers’ offense is going to keep it up this season, Kittle is going to need to have another monster season. With the team lacking any proven playmakers at the wide receiver position, Kittle is going to have an awful lot of playmaking responsibility on his shoulders. He has shown that he’s up to the task in the past, but we’ll see how he fares with opposing defenses being able to focus extra attention on stopping him.
It’s been a long, strange career for Raheem Mostert. The former Purdue standout has bounced around the league and got cut seven different times after going undrafted before the 2015 season. But he’s found a home in San Francisco. After being a minor contributor in 2017 and 2018, Mostert broke out with a career-high 772 rushing yards with eight touchdowns last season. He only recorded 137 carries, and his average of 5.6 yards per attempt led the team.
Mostert broke out in a big way in the 2024 postseason. In the NFC Championship game against the Packers, the 28-year-old carried the ball 29 times for a record 220 yards with four touchdowns in San Francisco’s 37-20 victory. Mostert’s emergence is a major reason for the team’s decision to trade Breida to the Dolphins, so it’s safe to assume he’ll play an even bigger role heading into the new season. We know the 49ers’ ability to win games hinges on their effectiveness running the football, so Mostert will be a featured player this season.

Jed York: (2008 – Present)
While Denise DeBartolo remains the principal owner, Jed York was appointed as
president of the San Francisco 49ers in 2008. Since taking the reins, the brash
young owner has found himself in several media controversies. His public falling
out with Jim Harbaugh resulted in the firing of the accomplished coach. That
said, in recent years, York has helped establish a strong foundation that seems
to be paying off.
Denise DeBartolo York and John York: (2000 – Present)
In 2000, Denise and her husband, John York, were handed control of the San
Francisco 49ers by her brother Eddie. They are still partial owners of the
franchise but have handed over ownership responsibilities to their son, Jed.
Eddie DeBartolo Jr. and Denise DeBartolo York: (1977- 2000)
Edward John DeBartolo Jr. is one of the most successful professional football
owners in NFL history. After purchasing a majority stake in the 49ers from the
Morabito family, DeBartolo set about fixing the horrible on-field product. His
most important move was hiring Bill Walsh as head coach.
During Eddie and Walsh’s time together, the Niners spent a few seasons
installing a new system and collecting early draft picks. During the ’80s, they
had built a core of players like Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, Dwight Clark, Roger
Craig, and Jerry Rice among others.
DeBartolo’s 49ers won five Super Bowls during his tenure and was beloved by
his players. In 1998, Eddie pleaded guilty to a charge related to Louisiana
governor Edwin Edwards’ corruption case. After serving his NFL suspension,
DeBartolo handed control of the franchise to his sister, Denise York, rather
than returning himself.
Josephine Morabito, Victor Morabito, and Ruffo: (1957- 1977)
Anthony Morabito died of a heart attack in 1957. He was watching the 49ers
play the Chicago Bears when it happened. Down 17-7 at the time of death, a note
was passed along to the coach on the sideline. An inspired Niners team rallied
to win the game 21-17.
Tony’s stake in the 49ers was passed on to his widow, Josephine. Josephine
and his brother Victor continued to run the franchise until Victor’s death in
1964. The two controlling owners were then Jane and Josephine Morabito, the two
brothers’ widows, who sold the team in 1977.
Tony and Victor Morabito: (1947 – 1957)
Anthony J. “Tony” Morabito made his money owning a lumber hauling business in
San Francisco in the 1930s and ’40s. With the growth of commercial air travel,
Tony believed the Bay Area was ready for a professional football team. But after
several failed attempts at receiving an expansion team, it was clear the NFL
disagreed.
Finally, after being declined once again in 1944, Morabito brought his offer
to Arch Ward. The Chicago Tribune sports editor was establishing a new,
competing league called the All-America Football Conference. Tony, his brother
Victor, and a handful of other investors founded the 49ers, who played their
first game in 1946.

In the most recent alteration, the 49ers merely changed to a brighter shade
of red. The rest of the design remained the same.

The team updated its oval design in 1996. Both letters received black
shadowing, with the “S” sitting on top of the “F,” and a gold outline was placed
between the red oval and black border.
