New England entered the game as hefty 17.5-point favorites, yet the Dolphins became the sixth team since 2003 to win a game outright despite entering as underdogs of 17.5 points or more.
While Miami isn’t necessarily expected to challenge for an AFC East title, the franchise does seem to be on the right track. Head coach Brian Flores seems like a keeper, and the Dolphins managed to get Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa with the No. 5 overall pick in April’s draft.

Josh Rosen began last season as Miami’s QB1, but it didn’t take long for that experiment to fail. Journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick got the call to take over early on, and he wound up serving as the Fins’ starter for the majority of the campaign.
While Tagovailoa will battle for the starting job in camp this year, the odds favor Fitzmagic to be under center for the Dolphins in Week 1. Fitzpatrick is a player that has run hot-and-cold over the course of his unique career, but he has at least earned the chance to fight for his job heading into the new season.
Fitzpatrick threw 20 touchdowns to 13 interceptions a season ago, which was actually one of the better touchdown-to-interception ratios of his career. The 37-year-old has always been a bit of a gunslinger, and his willingness to take risks can lead to some boom-or-bust performances. He’s capable of single-handedly winning a game, as he did in Week 17 against the Patriots. Fitz is also capable of playing his team out of a game, as he did in Week 2 against New England when he threw three INTs in a 43-0 loss.
Miami was almost always playing from behind last season, which meant the team often had to abandon the running game early and try to pass their way back into games. At this stage of his career, Fitzpatrick isn’t a cornerstone type of piece that will lead a team to the Super Bowl. In all likelihood, Fitz will begin the season as the starter before eventually giving way to Tagovailoa.
Don’t Forget These Players When Betting on the Dolphins
As mentioned, this team will be Tua’s before long. Even if the Alabama product doesn’t win the starting job in the preseason, he stands an excellent chance of getting the call at some point during his rookie year. The only way we won’t see Tua this season is if Fitzpatrick plays out of his mind and leads the Dolphins into playoff contention.
Needless to say, that’s unlikely. Tagovailoa likely fell to No. 5 in the draft due to questions about the hip injury he suffered in November of last season with the Crimson Tide. The lefty has gotten a clean bill of health from doctors as he has continued to rehab, though, and Miami clearly isn’t all that worried that the hip will have negative long-term effects.
Let’s not forget that the motto for Dolphins fans prior to last season was “Tank for Tua.” Had he not gotten hurt, Tagovailoa may well have been the No. 1 pick in April’s draft. While Tagovailoa may not have much impact on Miami’s win-loss record in 2020, he’s likely to be the face of the franchise moving forward.
DeVante Parker finally lived up to expectations last season. Following four dismal years, Parker broke out by hauling in 72 passes for 1,202 yards with nine touchdowns in 2024. He set career-highs across the board after failing to rack up more than 744 receiving yards or four touchdowns in any of his first four pro seasons.
Parker emerged as the clear-cut favorite option for Fitzpatrick in the passing game. Assuming 2024 wasn’t a flash in the pan, the former first-round pick could become one of the more prolific wideouts in the game if he continues his development in 2020. He topped 100 yards in four of the final seven games of last season while finishing fifth in the league in receiving yards. Without may other proven weapons in the passing attack, Parker should have a sizable workload once again next season.
Earlier this offseason, the Dolphins decided to make ex-Cowboys cornerback Byron Jones the game’s highest-paid CB. Jones inked a five-year deal worth $82 million, with $54.5 million in guarantees. With the deal, Jones surpassed his new teammate, Xavien Howard, to become the league’s highest-paid cornerback in terms of average annual value.
Miami suddenly has one of the most formidable cornerback duos in football, which should help improve the defense considerably. Howard was healthy for just five games last season, but in 2018, he led all of football with seven interceptions. Jones defended 43 passes across 79 career games over his first five NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.
The Dolphins were 9-7 in terms of over/unders a season ago. With Jones joining Howard in a revamped defensive backfield, the under could look like a more appealing bet in 2020.

Stephen M. Ross: (2008 – Present)
Stephen M. Ross bought his 95% stake in the Miami Dolphins and their stadium
over the course of two years. The billionaire real estate developer paid $550
million for 50% in 2008, and completed his purchase a year later, taking the
grand total to $1.1 billion.
As the majority owner, Ross has frequently approached celebrities to make
them minority owners in the Dolphins. Numerous celebrities such as Gloria
Estefan, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Jimmy Buffett, Fergie, and Serena and
Venus Williams all own small shares of the franchise.
Since Stephen M. Ross first began buying the Miami Dolphins, the team has
only qualified for the playoffs twice, losing in the Wild Card game both times.
Wayne Huizenga: (1990 – 2008)
After Joe Robbie’s death, his family was finding it too difficult to manage
operations for the organization. They quickly brought the Dolphins into a period
of financial distress and were completely in over their heads.
Wayne Huizenga stepped up to buy a 15% stake in the franchise in 1990,
helping them stay afloat. Four years later, he purchased the remaining shares
for $115 million. In 1996, Huizenga sold naming rights to the stadium, changing
Joe Robbie Stadium to Pro Player Park.
In 2008, Wayne sold 50% of the Miami Dolphins franchise and the stadium to
Stephen M. Ross. For the next year, Huizenga continued to manage operations,
until he sold another 45% of the team and stadium to Ross, leaving himself just
a 5% ownership stake and keeping a 50% proprietorship of the land the stadium is
on.
Joe Robbie: (1965 – 1990)
Joe Robbie was a lawyer, politician, and tobacco lobbyist before getting
involved with professional sports. After moving to Minneapolis to head the
Minnesota Candy and Tobacco Distributors Association, Robbie became interested
in football, even becoming a Minnesota Vikings season ticket holder.
In 1965, AFL commissioner Joe Foss met with Robbie to discuss starting an
expansion franchise and recommended Miami as a good location. Joe then partnered
with comedian Danny Thomas to raise $7.5 million for the franchise. The Miami
Dolphins would play their first season in 1966.
Danny Thomas sold his shares in the Dolphins in 1966, leaving Joe Robbie as
the sole owner. The former politician and lawyer owned the team until his death
in 1990.

Team Logos
Dolphin Sunburst (2013 – Present)
2013 – In 2013, Miami’s dolphin officially ditched its football helmet.
Staying true to the original design, the latest logos feature a more abstract
dolphin laid across an orange sunburst. Not only is it missing a helmet, but the
dolphin’s facial features and expression are also removed as well.
2018 – Some minor alterations were done to the logo in 2018. The only
noticeable difference is that the sunburst is a darker shade of orange.
Dolphin in a Football Helmet (1966 – 2012)
1966 – The Miami Dolphins have been one of the most consistent franchises in
the NFL when it comes to their logos. Their initial design featured a dolphin
leaping in front of an orange sunburst ring. The animal is wearing a football
helmet with an orange “M” on the side. The dolphin’s head is positioned near the
center of the ring in this earliest version.
1974 – The team updated their logo in 1974, making the dolphin larger in
proportion to the sunburst ring. Where his helmet used to be inside the circle,
now the animal’s head and tail are overlapping the outer edges of the sunburst.
1989 – Miami updated the design once again in 1989. The concept is the same,
but the shade of orange used for the sunburst is darker, as is the dolphin’s
teal color. While almost the same, the subtle changes made this variation
bolder.
1997 – The dolphin logo received major upgrades in 1997. The drawing of the
dolphin is much clearer, and a variety of accent marks give the image a more
three-dimensional appearance. It’s now wearing an angry scowl on the dolphin’s
face as well. Lastly, the sunburst was redone without the hash marks, making it
seem sharper and cleaner.
