Remember when Blake Bortles led the Jacksonville Jaguars to the AFC Championship Game? Somehow, that was only two seasons ago. The Jags entered 2018 as a popular pick to make another deep playoff run, but the franchise has trended back in the wrong direction ever since. The Jaguars went 5-11 the season after their AFC title game showing, and last year they improved slightly to 6-10.
Still, that 2017 season is the team’s only playoff appearance since 2007. The franchise is still in search of its first Super Bowl, and oddsmakers certainly don’t think 2020 is the year for that. Despite several teams having worse records than the Jaguars last year, Jacksonville faces the longest odds to win Super Bowl 55 of any team. The Jags are currently listed at +15000 to win the team’s first-ever title, which puts them behind also-rans like the Redskins, Bengals, and Panthers.
Last season was a disaster from the start when Nick Foles went down with an injury in Week 1. The Jaguars had signed the former Super Bowl MVP to a four-year deal last offseason worth $88 million, but he wound up playing in just four games. Rookie Gardner Minshew got most of the work with Foles on the sidelines. While the mustached youngster developed a cult following, his on-field performance left plenty to be desired.
The Jaguars unceremoniously traded Foles to the Bears in March, and they curiously haven’t been overly aggressive in seeking his replacement. As of now, Minshew looks to be the favorite to be under center in Week 1 of the 2020 campaign. The only other QBs on the roster are Mike Glennon, Josh Dobbs, and Jake Luton, so there obviously isn’t a proven alternative currently in the mix.
It’s hard to win games in the NFL if you don’t have an upper-echelon quarterback. Jacksonville has a win total prop around just 4.5 at most NFL betting sites, which is among the lowest in all of football. The Jags are also the betting favorites to secure the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft. Gardner Minshew was the team’s sixth-round pick last year out of Washington State. Jacksonville obviously didn’t have plans for the youngster to play as a rookie after throwing so much money at Foles, but Minshew was thrown into the fire almost immediately.
While his numbers don’t jump off the page, Minshew performed admirably for a guy that entered the season with zero expectations. He completed better than 60% of his pass attempts for 3,271 yards with 21 touchdowns to just six interceptions. Lots of young quarterbacks are turnover machines when they get their first taste of the NFL, yet Minshew’s ability to protect the football was impressive.
He also carried the ball 67 times for another 344 yards, which was a wrinkle to his game few saw coming. His efforts didn’t lead to many wins for the Jags in 2024, but the team was clearly impressed enough with him to decide against bringing in a veteran to replace Foles. There’s a strong chance the team will opt to take a quarterback with their first-rounder next year if the upcoming season doesn’t go according to plan, but the Jags seem comfortable enough with Minshew in the meantime.
Unfortunately, he won’t have a lot of help at his disposal. Leonard Fournette is one of the few every-down backs left in football, but his group of receivers leaves plenty to be desired. DJ Chark put up an impressive season last year when he led the team with 1,008 receiving yards and eight TDs, but there isn’t much depth at the position. Dede Westbrook has been hit-or-miss early in his career, while Chris Conley is likely a bit overexposed as the WR2 on the depth chart.
If Minshew shows tangible improvement next season, perhaps the Jaguars can perform better than expected. If not, Jaguars bettors will be counting down the days until Trevor Lawrence comes to town next year.
Don’t Forget These Players When Betting on the Jaguars
The Jaguars reportedly toyed with the idea of trading Leonard Fournette this offseason, but they weren’t able to find a taker for their asking price. The former LSU standout may not have lived up to his lofty expectations since being taken fourth overall back in 2017, but he has still proven to be a useful commodity. Fournette accrued a career-high 1,152 rushing yards on 265 attempts a season ago, but he found the end zone just three times. However, he had his best receiving season to date, achieving career-highs in catches (76), targets (100), and receiving yards (522).
Fournette’s backups on the depth chart are Chris Thompson and Ryquell Armstead, so we can safely expect Fournette to carry most of the burden in the Jags’ running game again next season. The addition of Thompson likely means Fournette won’t be as active in the passing game, but he still should find no shortage of opportunities.
Few expected DJ Chark, another LSU product, to rise up and become the team’s WR1 in just his second season, but that’s exactly what happened. Chark caught 73 passes on 118 targets and found the end zone eight times. He has shown the ability to stretch the field while also proving useful in shorter-yardage situations. That versatility will come in handy for the Jaguars, especially considering the lack of other viable options for Minshew in the passing attack.
Defenses will almost surely focus more attention on Chark following his breakout season, so it may be up to the likes of Westbrook, Conley, and others to shoulder more of the load.
While 2024 was a forgettable season in Jacksonville, the team has to be pleased with the performance of rookie Josh Allen. The team’s first-rounder from last season led the way with 10.5 sacks as a rookie, while also totaling 11.5 tackles for loss. Allen’s performance was strong enough to earn him Pro Bowl honors out of the AFC, and the sky is clearly the limit for the 22-year-old.
The Jaguars parted ways with another quality pass rusher in Calais Campbell this offseason, so Allen may not have quite as much help in the pass rush as he did a season ago. The defense also lost a capable corner in AJ Bouye, while Yannick Ngakoue’s status with the team is tenuous at best. There’s a decent chance that Allen and Myles Jack will be the only proven commodities on this defense when the season starts, which is certainly troublesome for the Jags’ prospects of making much noise in 2020.

Shahid Khan: (2012 – Present)
Shahid Khan is a billionaire businessman who first attempted to buy the St.
Louis Rams. When that fell through in 2010, Khan set his sights on Jacksonville.
He agreed to the purchase, estimated to have cost roughly $760 million, in
November 2011 and immediately set about searching for their next head coach.
Shahid Khan is one of the owners most committed to expanding the NFL
internationally. Since the 2013 season, the Jaguars have played one of their
home games each year in London. The Pakistani billionaire also owns the
London-based soccer team Fulham FC.
Wayne Weaver: (1995 – 2012)
In 1991, the NFL announced plans to introduce two new expansion franchises to
the league. One city that had been vying for a team was Jacksonville. Weaver, a
shoe magnate, eventually came to lead the investment group leading the charge to attempt to bring a franchise to Jacksonville.
Despite being considered the least likely market to receive a franchise,
Jacksonville was awarded the second expansion team one month after the
announcement of the Carolina Panthers. It was a huge year for big southern cats.
In Weaver’s first five seasons, Jacksonville qualified for the playoffs four
times, advancing to the AFC Championship twice, including their second year!
However, after 1999, the organization’s on-field performance was mostly
mediocre, with several competitive seasons, but no playoff luck. They never
again won the AFC South until 2017. In 2012, Wayne Weaver announced he’d be
selling the Jaguars, just after firing his second head coach Jack Del Rio.

Team Logos
Current Jaguar Head (2013 – Present)
The current logo is the same basic concept as the previous jaguar’s head,
only updated. They’ve redrawn the picture to appear more dangerous and
aggressive, with a more anatomically correct design. The fur is gold and white,
while the trademark teal is still used for the tongue, though it has been
extended to the cat’s eyes and nose.
Original Jaguar Head (1995 – 2012)
The Jaguars released their second logo (first official) in 1995. Instead of
the full cat, this design is a snarling jaguar head. The majority of the head is
gold, but the tongue is teal. The color of the tongue was Wayne Weaver’s wife’s
idea, who said it represented the Jaguars eating the Panthers, their partner in
expansion.
Unused Jaguar (1993 – 1994)
The very first Jacksonville Jaguars logo was never officially used. The
design first presented was of a jaguar fully extended mid-sprint, appearing as
if it’s almost flying. However, it looked so similar to the automaker Jaguar’s
logo, the Ford Motor Company, which owned Jaguar, asked them to redesign the
graphic. In exchange, Jaguar became the official car of the franchise.
