The Carolina Panthers put together one of the best seasons in NFL history back in 2015. That year, Cam Newton won the league’s MVP award after leading the Panthers to a 15-1 regular-season record. Carolina was a popular bet to win Super Bowl 50 that year, but the Panthers wound up falling at the hands of the Denver Broncos in the big game, 24-10.
Since then, things have taken a turn for the worse for the franchise. The team has made the playoffs just once in the four seasons since their aforementioned Super Bowl berth. The 5-11 record posted by Carolina last season was the team’s worst mark since going 6-10 back in 2011.
2011 was Newton’s first year in the league. Following a solid run as the Panthers’ starting quarterback that lasted nearly a decade, Newton has since moved on. The team cut the former MVP earlier this offseason, and he has since signed on with the New England Patriots.
The decision to part ways with Newton came shortly after the team agreed to a big-money deal with free agent Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater was one of the NFL’s most promising young passers during his days with the Vikings, but a devastating knee injury before the 2016 season derailed his ascent. He has spent the last two seasons as Drew Brees’ primary backup in New Orleans, and he performed well enough during Brees’ injury absence last season to earn a $63 million deal from the Panthers in March of 2020.
Carolina also sent former head coach Ron Rivera packing, and he was replaced by ex-Baylor boss Matt Rhule. Rhule has been one of the more sought-after college coaches on the market over the past couple of years, and the Panthers were willing to splash the cash necessary to lure him to Charlotte. Rhule will earn $62 million over the course of his sizable seven-year deal, which makes him one of the league’s highest-paid coaches.
While the 2020 Panthers will look a lot different than the 2024 iteration, oddsmakers aren’t too optimistic about the chances of the team enjoying much more on-field success. Carolina has a win total prop of over/under 5.5, which is among the lowest in football. The Panthers also face the longest odds of any team to win a division at +2000 to win the NFC South. The division features a pair of Super Bowl contenders in the Saints and Bucs, as well as a fairly unpredictable Falcons team, so that makes plenty of sense.

As mentioned, it’s been a few years since Teddy Bridgewater was a regular starting QB in the NFL. Bridgewater’s knee injury essentially cost him two years’ worth of development, and he has played in just 14 games across the last two years. He’s played in all 16 games just once since being drafted back in 2014 as well.
While the Panthers are clearly sold on the 27-year-old being a starting-caliber QB at this level, the jury is still out. He finished last season with nine touchdown passes compared to just two interceptions, but he was also working with one of the game’s most talented offenses in New Orleans.
Bridgewater will have some help with the Panthers, but there will almost surely be an adjustment period. Carolina’s offense will continue to flow through Pro Bowl running back Christian McCaffrey, who has quickly become one of the game’s most lethal all-purpose backs.
While the Panthers don’t have a proven No. 1 receiver, there is some upside in the receiving corps, too. DJ Moore accrued nearly 1,200 yards receiving a season ago, despite operating with shoddy quarterback play. Having a more steady presence in the pocket should only improve Moore’s numbers moving forward. Curtis Samuel paced the team with six touchdown catches a year ago, while former Jet Robby Anderson was signed to a free-agent deal. Anderson will bring a vertical presence to the offense that was missing a season ago.
The Panthers are paying Bridgewater to be a star. If he can start to live up to that potential, then there’s a strong chance that Carolina can be better than advertised this season. The Panthers have seen their win total decline in each of the last three years, but the team’s brass is clearly hoping that Bridgewater’s addition will help them improve upon last season’s dismal five-win performance.
Don’t Forget These Players When Betting on the Panthers
While we still don’t know what to expect out of Bridgewater over the course of a full season, we have a pretty good idea as to what Christian McCaffrey brings to the table. McCaffrey was one of the most prolific offensive players in football last season. He carried the ball 287 times for 1,387 yards with 15 touchdowns. For good measure, he added another 116 catches for 1,005 with seven more receiving touchdowns.
McCaffrey’s 2,392 yards from scrimmage last season were the third-most any player has ever produced. Only Chris Johnson and Marshall Faulk have had more productive campaigns. That’s some pretty heady company for a player that will be entering his fourth pro season in 2020. Opposing defenses will be game planning to stop McCaffrey, but that sure didn’t work last season. Expect another big year out of the Panthers’ No. 1 playmaker.
The Panthers grabbed DJ Moore with the No. 24 overall pick in 2018. While he showed flashes as a rookie, he really came into his own last season. The former Maryland standout nabbed 87 receptions for 1,175 yards with four touchdowns. His performance was impressive considering Newton was healthy for just two games, which led to Kyle Allen drawing the vast majority of the snaps for the Panthers’ offense.
While McCaffrey is obviously the featured player in the offense, Moore is often the forgotten man. He still racked up 135 targets last season, and he should get even more work in 2020 with a better quarterback feeding him the football.
While Allen wasn’t horrible in Newton’s place, the Panthers have a far better chance at staying competitive if Bridgewater can stay healthy. Bridgewater and Moore should be able to forge an early connection, and the speedster will hope to be able to display his big-play ability more often. The addition of Robby Anderson should also help take some attention away from opposing defenses.
The Panthers’ defense will also look different next season following the retirement of longtime middle linebacker Luke Kuechly. Kuechly has been one of the game’s more unheralded leaders over the years, and his presence will be sorely missed in the middle of the Carolina defense. That defense features a number of unproven commodities, which is a big factor in oddsmakers’ assumptions that this team is going to struggle to win games.
However, the Carolina Panthers do have high hopes in rookie Derrick Brown. Brown was the No. 7 overall pick in April’s draft out of Auburn, and he should instantly slide into the middle of the Panthers’ D-line. Brown should be able to generate some push on the interior of the defensive line. The Panthers actually finished last season with the second-most sacks in the NFL (53), but they didn’t have a single player crack 10. Brown wasn’t a big source of sacks during his days at Auburn, but he could be a nice replacement for the departed Dontari Poe, Vernon Butler, and Gerald McCoy.

David Tepper: (2018 – Present)
David Tepper is one of the highest-earning hedge fund managers in the world,
with annual earnings of $1.5 billion. When Jerry Richardson felt compelled to
sell the Panthers following a scandal, Tepper stepped in to purchase the
franchise for $2.2 billion, though he was forced first to sell his 5% stake in
the Pittsburgh Steelers.
His massive bid for the team was the largest in NFL history made by a sole
investor without an entire group pooling funds. Thus far, the hedge fund manager
has publicly committed to keeping the Panthers in North Carolina.
Jerry Richardson: (1995 – 2018)
Jerry Richardson had a short-lived NFL career between 1959 and 1960 when he
played for the Baltimore Colts. He even won a championship playing alongside
Johnny Unitas. Richardson used his football money to begin funding investments
in the food services industry, where he made his fortune. In 1993, he became
only the second former NFL player to become an owner, only beaten to the honor
by George Halas much earlier.
Jerry Richardson was awarded the Carolina Panthers as an expansion team, the
29th franchise in the NFL. During his tenure, the team advanced to
two Super Bowls, but have yet to win a title. In 2017, Sports Illustrated
published a report concerning Richardson’s inappropriate conduct and the large
settlements the Panthers had paid out to at least four employees. That same day,
Jerry announced that he’d be selling his franchise at the end of the season.

The Panthers updated their design in 2012. While the basics are the same,
black panther showing its teeth, the graphics are much sleeker and more
stylized. The artists included more panther blue accents and altered the face to
look slightly more aggressive and formidable.

The Carolina Panthers are one of the NFL’s youngest franchises and, thus,
haven’t cycled through many logo designs. Their current logo is heavily based on
their initial black panther drawing that debuted in 1995. The cat’s head is
