Drew Brees is one of the most celebrated quarterbacks in league history, and he’ll never have to buy another drink in New Orleans thanks to all that he’s been able to accomplish since signing with the Saints in 2006. He was limited to just 11 games last season due to injury, but when he was healthy, he was still among the most dynamic quarterbacks in the league.
Across those 11 appearances, Brees threw for a shade under 3,000 yards with 27 touchdowns to just four interceptions. Brees is still more than happy to take shots down the field, and his 7.9 yards per attempt ranked 10th in the league. While his overall production levels have steadily declined over the past handful of seasons, there is still nothing he can’t do on the football field.
The 41-year-old has been able to extend his career thanks in large part to a bevy of quality weaponry in the Saints’ offense. Brees has arguably the game’s most reliable pass-catcher in Michael Thomas running routes on every down, while the team boosted the wide receiving corps with the addition of Emmanuel Sanders this offseason. Jared Cook is also back after a productive first season in New Orleans during which he hauled in a career-high nine touchdowns.
The Saints have a two-headed rushing attack between Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray, as well as one of the most steady offensive lines in football. New Orleans’ O-line gives Brees more than enough time to sit back in the pocket and pick opposing defenses apart, which is something he’s been doing year in and year out for 20 years in this league.

Michael Thomas has done nothing but put up huge numbers since coming to the NFL in 2016. The Ohio State product has increased his output in every pro season to date, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down. Thomas has caught at least 92 passes every year, with no fewer than 1,100 yards receiving in any season. Last year was his most productive yet, as he recorded career-highs in catches (149), targets (185), and receiving yards (1,725) while tying his career-best with nine touchdowns.
Brees and Thomas have a better connection than any other quarterback-receiver tandem in football, so there’s no reason to believe we won’t see Brees looking to Thomas early and often again in 2020. It’s no surprise that Thomas is the odds-on favorite to lead the NFL in both receiving yards (+500) and receptions (+400) for the second straight year at NFL betting sites.
Cameron Jordan doesn’t get a ton of attention considering how the Saints’ offense typically generates most of the headlines, but he has been among the most consistent pass-rushers in the league for nearly a decade now. Since being taken by the Saints in the first round of the 2011 draft, Jordan has racked up double-digit sacks across five different seasons, including each of the last three.
Jordan’s 15.5 sacks in 2024 were a career-high, and the 31-year-old will surely be a featured player in New Orleans’ aggressive defense again this year. Gayle Benson: (2018 – Present)
Tom Benson died in 2018, at the age of 90. In his final years, he fired his
adopted daughter (from his first marriage) and her two children from the Saints
franchise and wrote them all out of his will.
They attempted to sue, declaring him incompetent, but his ownership stake had
already been put into a family trust. While he was forced to pay to replace
their shares, their claim to his two sports franchises was gone.
When Tom Benson died on March 15th, 2018, his controlling stakes
in the Saints and New Orleans Pelicans were passed on to his third wife, Gayle
Benson.
Tom Benson: (1985 – 2018)
Tom Benson bought the New Orleans Saints in 1985. A group of investors had
been discussing buying the team from John Mecom Jr. and moving it to
Jacksonville, Florida. Governor Edwin W. Edwards got news of the potential
relocation and informed Benson, who intervened to save the city’s franchise.
However, Tom Benson’s popularity would decline later. In 2005, he was
attempting to negotiate for a new stadium from the city, threatening to move the
Saints if they didn’t replace the Superdome. Hurricane Katrina ravaged New
Orleans shortly after, and the team spent the season playing home games in San
Antonio.
The fans believed he was attempting to use the tragedy to relocate, and there
was evidence that confirmed their beliefs. Ultimately, the Superdome would be
fully refurbished, and the Bensons made a commitment to stay in New Orleans.
John W. Mecom Jr.: (1967 – 1985)
John W. Mecom Jr. was a Texas oilman who founded the New Orleans Saints in
1967, purchasing the franchise for $8.5 million. The NFL awarded the city a new
time, primarily in response to political pressure.
At the time, NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle was attempting to complete the
AFL-NFL merger but would need congressional approval to do so. Congressman Hale
Boggs and Senator Russell Long essentially forced the league to give New Orleans
a franchise if they were to vote to approve the merger.
The new team was announced on November 1st, 1996, the Catholic All
Saints’ Day. Mecom’s tenure as owner was not at all successful. The Saints never
made the playoffs under their founder’s ownership. They didn’t even have a
winning season. The best seasons with Mecom in charge were two 8-8 campaigns in
1979 and 1983, respectively. He sold the franchise in 1985.

Gold, White, and Black Fleur-de-lis (2000 – Present)
The Saints have made several changes to their logo since introducing gold
into the center portion of the fleur-de-lis, but most have been minor. The gold
shape is outlined by a black border, which is then bordered by white, with one
last black outline on the outermost edge. Adjustments were made in 2002, 2012,
and 2017, but in each case, the only difference is the shade of gold used in the
interior of the fleur-de-lis.
Black fleur-de-lis (1967 – 1999)
The New Orleans Saints have been extremely consistent when it comes to logo
design. From the beginning, the franchise adopted the fleur-de-lis, a symbol of
