Icy World Slot Machine Overview
Atmosphere / Background
The background is set on frozen water, which overlooks snowcapped mountains
and trees. The mountains, trees, and water all feature strong detail, making
this background a pleasure to look at.
The reels, jackpot markets, and betting options are covered in a thin layer
of snow, which completes the wintry atmosphere.
One more good aspect of the background includes snowflakes falling while
you’re playing. Although not the first slot to use this effect, we like how
large and realistic Icy World’s snowflakes look.
Our only complaint is that the reels are transparent, making some of the
symbols hard to distinguish from the background. But this is a small complaint
about what’s otherwise a really good background.
Music and Sound Effects
The music is a happy guitar tune that sounds like a mix of wilderness and
holidays. We can’t say that the music is a perfect match for Icey World, but it
creates a pleasant feeling.
As for sound effects, our favorite occurs when coins drop into your Credits
section because it sounds like the Nintendo game Super Mario Bros.
Other sound effects are the generic variety that you’ll find in any slot
machine. These include: a dreamy sound during wins, clicking when reels start
and stop, and a movie project sound while the reels are spinning.
We aren’t thrilled about the sound effects, but the coin sound helps save Icy
World in this department.
Animations
As described before, the best animation is the snowflakes falling, which
keeps Icy World from being a run of the mill winter slot.
Other animations include: winning symbols moving closer to the reels, coins
hopping into your Credits section, the snow fox blinking, penguin swaying from
side to side, winning letters/numbers forming together, the polar bear moving
towards the reels, the popsicle disappearing as it’s eaten, and the snowman
bobbing up and down.
Icy World Pay Table and Graphics
Icy World features 15 symbols, with only half of these actually dealing with
winter.
We’ll discuss the mismatching symbols later, but first, here’s a look at
the symbols and payouts.
Symbols:
Crown w / Sapphire Mega Jackpot
A gold crown that looks fit for Elsa from
Disney’s Frozen, this symbol triggers the Mega Jackpot when landing 5 times in a
pay line.
Ruby Broach Minor Jackpot
This ruby pays the Minor Jackpot when appearing 5
times in an active line.
Emerald Ring Mini Jackpot
The emerald ring triggers the Mini Jackpot when
landing 5 times in a pay line.
Penguin Wild
With one leg up in the air and arms outstretched, this cute
penguin substitutes for everything except jackpot, bonus, and scatter symbols to
form wins. The penguin also pays 150 coins when forming its own 5 symbol payout.
Polar Bear
Halfway submerged in frozen waters with its arms on an ice cap,
this bear offers 200 coins for 5 symbols, 40 for 4, and 12 for 3.
Snow Fox
The snow fox offers 150 coins for 5 symbols, 40 for 4, and 12 for
3.
White Seal
Giving the camera a close up of its face, this white seal pays
120 coins for 5 symbols, 30 for 4, and 12 for 3.
A
One of five purple letters/numbers, the A pays 100 coins for 5 symbols,
30 for 4, and 10 for 3.
K
The K delivers 80 coins for 5 symbols, 25 for 4, and 10 for 3.
Q
The Q pays 60 coins for 5 symbols, 25 for 4, and 10 for 3.
J, 10
These two symbols pay 50 coins for 5 symbols, 20 for 4, and 10 for 3.
Snowman Scatter
The snowman offers scatter payouts that are multiplied by
your total bet. Scatter prizes include: 100x your bet for 5 symbols, 30x for 4,
and 5x for 3.
Popsicle Free Spins
The popsicle delivers free spins when appearing 3 or
more times anywhere on the reels.
Mammoth Bonus
This wooly mammoth triggers the bonus when landing 3 times on
the reels.
Symbol Graphics
Staying true to 777igt slots, Icy World offers outstanding symbol graphics
that include both cartoon and realistic styles.
The fox, mammoth, seal, penguin, and polar bear symbols offer realistic
depictions of these animals. The snowman and popsicle feature cartoonish
graphics that also look good.
While we’re fans of Icy World’s symbols, we do think that the following
points are odd:
- Why does this game have emeralds, rubies, and sapphires? We get that these
are found in many slot machines, but they’re too general in Icy World.
- Why is a popsicle in this game? While popsicles are common frozen treats, they, like the
gemstones, don’t fit in with the Arctic Circle theme.
- Where does the wooly mammoth come into play? Mammoths went extinct over 10,000
years ago, and it’s weird to include them in this slot.
Icy World Slot Bonus Features
Icy World features several features, including free games, a second screen
bonus, and three progressive jackpots. Below you can see the details on all of
these features.
Free Spins
When you trigger free spins with popsicles, a voice announces them and the
reels begin spinning automatically. We don’t like how the reels automatically
spin because it’s sometimes nice to take a break before free games begin.
Another problem is that you don’t get any multipliers, special symbols, new
background, or fresh music. These are just basic spins – the only difference is
that you don’t have to pay to play.
The one good thing is how often Icy World gives you free games. Playing all
25 lines, we triggered this bonus around once every 25 spins.
Bonus Round
The bonus round keeps you on the frozen waters, where you’ll see a 5×3 grid
of ice blocks in the middle of the screen.
You’re given a pickaxe and asked to break up blocks to reveal prizes. You get
two choices, after which the bonus ends and you collect your winnings.
Although an enjoyable second screen bonus, the one thing we hate is that it
sometimes malfunctions. The first time we played, we didn’t even get to break up
any blocks because the instructions stayed on the screen, and the bonus
automatically ended.
While we still collected a bonus prize, the fact that the game didn’t let us
pick blocks is annoying. The bonus worked the rest of the times and, barring any
malfunctions, it’s a fun game to play.
One interesting side note is that Olaf and Sven from Frozen stand off to the
right during the bonus. We’re not sure if 777igt actually licensed these Disney
characters just for this purpose, especially since their appearances are so
random.
3 Jackpots
This game offers Mega, Minor, and Mini Jackpots – all of which are huge.
At the time of this review, the Mega Jackpot is worth $1,315,497, the Minor
Jackpot sits at $662,748, and the Mini Jackpot is worth $438,499.
The thing we love about these progressive jackpots is that they all offer a
life changing amount. But the catch is that with such big prizes, even your
chances of winning the Mini Jackpot are slim.
Nevertheless, we still enjoy having the opportunity to play for huge
jackpots.
Betting Options
You can use 5, 10, 15, 20, or 25 pay lines, and adjust your bet per line from
$0.01 to $2.00. This makes the minimum bet $0.05 and the max worth $50.00.
Unlike some 777igt games we’ve played, which use tiny plus/minus symbols to
adjust payouts, this game features big buttons that are easy to click.
Other Options
You can use Auto spin to automatically spin the reels for between 10 and
infinity turns. We found the infinity option unnecessary for our purposes, but
it’s still nice to have if you want to hunt for the jackpots.
Volume can be adjusted with the speaker button in the upper right hand
corner. The speaker offers a sliding bar for precise control over the volume.
Win Frequency
After playing Icy World for about 300 spins, we found the win frequency to be
above average for a 25 pay line slot.
The penguin wild helped us from a lot of wins with the letters, seal, and
fox. Of course, some of these wins are net losses when you’re playing all 25
lines.
The good thing is that you can recoup your losses through the frequent
scatter payouts, free spins, and bonus rounds.
Thanks to how many times we triggered the bonuses, we ended up with a $0.50
profit on the session.
Game Rules
Icy World features standard rules for a 5 reel slot machine, which you can
see below:
- Payouts are made from left to right, starting with the leftmost reel.
- The exception is scatter and bonus symbols, which trigger rewards from anywhere on the reels.
- Wins are multiplied by your bet per line to determine payouts i.e.
betting $1 and winning 10 coins = $10 payout.
- Free spins are played at the trigger number of pay lines and bet per line.
Comparison to Other Winter Themed Slot Machines
For the sake of comparisons, let’s look at how Icy World fares against
Arrow’s Edge’s Board Babe and Rival Gaming’s Ice Picks. The reason we’ve chosen
these games is because they offer a non-Christmas winter angle.
Arrow’s Edge’s Board Babe Slot Machines
This 5 reel, 9 pay line game takes you onto the slopes for some snowboarding
action.
Immediate aspects to like about this game include its symbol graphics and
background.
Regarding the latter, you’ll see snowcapped houses, mountains, and trees
below, indicating that you’re on top of a slope. The babe stands to the right,
dressed in her snowsuit and ready to board down the slopes.
The symbol graphics feature high quality cartoons that are reminiscent of the
snowman and popsicle in Icy World. Board Babe’s symbols include: the Board Babe
wild, snowflake scatter, dog, snow globe, goggles, snowman, and letters /
numbers.
Features include free games and scatter payouts, which don’t measure up to
the offerings of Icy World.
The problem with Board Babe is that, beyond its quality background and
symbols, this game is a basic 5 reel slot. Compare this to Icy World, which
features falling snowflakes, a second screen bonus, and three progressive
jackpots.
Rival Gaming’s Ice Picks Slot Machines
This 5 reel, 20 pay line game opens with an introduction that shows a man
standing in a helicopter as snowy mountains pass by. He then jumps out the
helicopter, snow boards down a mountain, and travels to a cave.
This James Bond like intro sets you up for a perilous, treasure hunting
adventure into an icy cave.
Symbols include frozen gold idols, frozen skulls, frozen gold bracelets,
caveman hammers, climbing spikes, goggles, a helmet, icepick, jewels jackpot,
crate wild, and a treasure map bonus.
The bonus round is almost identical to Icy World’s since you select ice
blocks to reveal treasures. The main difference is that Ice Picks’ bonus takes
place in a cave.
Overall, we like Ice Picks’ introduction video, theme, and symbols. But this
is an older slot, so its symbol and background graphics don’t compare to what
Icy World offers.
Conclusion
We were immediately impressed upon opening Icy World and seeing the arctic
background and falling snowflakes. The symbols also help in the visual area
because they offer a mix of high quality cartoons and realistic icons.
Unlike other 777igt slot machines, Icy World also offers unique animations.
While these aren’t anything special in relation to the slots world, the
animations do make Icy World stand out from other 777igt games.
Another thing to appreciate about this slot is its features, including three
progressive jackpots, free games, and a bonus round. While the bonus round
malfunctioned on our first attempt, it worked every time thereafter and proved
to be fun.
Downsides to Icy World include its generic sound effects and oddly placed
symbols. Regarding the latter, we don’t like how jewels and popsicles are
included in this game.
But overall, these small drawbacks don’t hinder what’s one of the best winter
themed slots that we’ve played.
