The Story of Troy

The legend of Troy has been told in books and movies, but there are still plenty of folks who might not be familiar with it. In order to make your life easier, this section is meant to provide a basic overview.

Helen was the most beautiful woman in the world during the age of the Greek gods, and powerful men from across the land came to seek her hand in marriage. They all took an oath to defend her eventual husband from any potential enemies, and the Spartan king Menelaus was eventually chosen as her groom.

Later, a prince of Troy named Paris journeyed to Sparta as part of a diplomatic mission, and he seduced Helen before taking her back to his homeland. Menelaus called on all his wife’s former suitors to fulfill their oaths, which resulted in a massive army sailing to Troy and the onset of the Trojan War.

The ensuring conflict lasted for years, with both gods and mortal champions taking the field of battle. Among them were great warriors such as Hector, Achilles, and Ajax, although all of these men perished before the conclusion of the war. Paris also died, and some versions of the story have Helen then becoming lovers with his younger brother (who also met a tragic end).

Odysseus, one of Helen’s former suitors, eventually came up with a plan. The Greek armies appeared to retreat, and they left behind a huge wooden horse as tribute to their opponents. The victorious Trojans hauled the horse inside their walls, got drunk during a citywide celebration, and never noticed the Greek warriors who were hiding inside their “present.”

Once most of the Trojans were asleep, the warriors crept out of the massive horse, opened the city gates, and proceeded to loot and burn Troy with the help of their hidden army. Despite what you might have seen in the Brad Pitt movie, Helen eventually returned to Sparta with Menelaus.

This mythological tale was most famously told by Homer in a book known as The Iliad. He also wrote a sequel known as The Odyssey, which followed the epic efforts of Odysseus to return home following the war.

Expected Payback

The expected payback is an important percentage, and anyone who’s thinking about playing this slot should check it out before doing so. According to the rules of Treasures of Troy, “The expected payback reflects the theoretical return across a very large number of plays by numerous players over an extended period of time.”

In the case of this game, the expected payback varies from 92.90% to 95.03%. The fluctuation comes into play based on the overall number of spins, as well as any strategic decisions that the customer makes during the game. Over the short term, the percentage is more likely to be 92.90%, while long-term play should result in 95.03%.

So what do these numbers mean? The percentage is meant to indicate the amount of money that the player can reasonably expect to get back. If the percentage is 92.90%, for example, then the gamer would receive $92.90 for every $100 they deposited.

If you play slots on a regular basis, you’ll notice that no machine has an expected payback of 100% or higher. This is the key reason why slots are so profitable for casinos, as they’re programmed to ultimately take in more money than they pay out. This assures the casino of a long-term profit, which is part of the reason why most land-based and virtual gaming establishments flourish when it comes to making money.

As far as Treasures of Troy goes, its expected payback ranges from average to below average. By way of comparison, the average slot machine is Las Vegas has a payback percentage of 95%. Of course, playing online allows you to avoid all the costs associated with a weekend of land-based gambling, so you may still come out ahead in the long run.

Multiway Wins

This five-reel slot can be played for as little as $0.01, but wagering the maximum amount gives you access to the multiway option and 1,024 ways to win. Each space on the screen is considered an individual reel, and there are a total of 20.

The multiway award pays for the same symbol in any position in adjacent columns. If the same symbol appears in the same column, then the cash award is multiplied.

These payouts are in addition to line awards, so it gives the player an extra chance to walk away with some loot. Helen might have been the ultimate prize during the era of Troy, but most modern gamblers would likely prefer her cash equivalent.

Game Symbols and Payouts

In this section, we’ll take a look at the game’s various symbols, as well as their corresponding payouts. Feel free to minimize this article during play and refer to it whenever needed, or you can find the same information by clicking on the “Pays” icon in the upper right section of the game screen.

Before we begin, please note that all payouts are multiplied by the coin value during a specific spin. Therefore, a player risking $10 per line who hits a 500 payout would actually receive $5,000 instead of just $500. I assume most readers already knew this information, but anyone who didn’t should be in for a pleasant surprise.

  • Helen of Troy
  • The most beautiful mortal woman in the ancient world, Helen has been referred to as “the face that launched a thousand ships” for her part in starting the Trojan War. If the Multiway feature is activated, Menelaus pays 250 for five matches and 75 for four. With the regular line awards, however, winning players can expect to receive one of the following payouts: 1000 for five, 400 for four, and 75 for three.

  • Helmet of Achilles
  • The head protection for Achilles, the greatest warrior of the Greek army. If the Multiway feature is activated, the helmet icon pays 100 for five matches and 40 for four. • Sword of Achilles

  • Treasures of Troy
  • Most slot machines have one icon that serves as the game’s main symbol, much like sports franchises have a team logo. In this case, it bears the words “Treasures of Troy,” so there’s little doubt what it’s mean to represent. While it doesn’t have its own payout, it does serve as a wild icon and substitute for all other paying symbols. It only appears in columns two through five, and it always stands in for whatever icon would result in the largest payout.

  • Trojan Horse
  • According to legend, the Greeks used this giant statute of a horse to fool the Trojans. Once it was inside Troy’s high walls, the soldiers hiding inside snuck out, killed the guards, and flung open the gates for their allies. The term “Trojan horse” has endured over the centuries, and it’s now used to mean anything that carries an unexpected (and usually nasty) surprise. This icon only appears in column three during the base game, but getting two or more awards the player with free spins. You can read more about this in the upcoming section.

Bonus Round

Most online slots come with a bonus round, as it’s a great way to attract customers and give the illusion of greater payouts. Treasures of Troy only has one such bonus, but it’s obviously better than having none at all.

In order to activate the free spins bonus round, you’ll need to get anywhere from two to four Trojan horse symbols anywhere in the third column of the base game. If this occurs, you’ll be awarded one of the following:

  • Two Trojan Horses
  • 10 free spins

  • Three Trojan
  • Horses

    15 free spins

  • Four Trojan
  • Horses

    20 free spins

When the free spins are activated, they’re played using the same coin value, number of ways, and number of lines as the triggering spin. During this phase, different reels are used to help the player differentiate from the base game.

While the player enjoys their free spins, they’ll have a chance to earn ever more complimentary games. This is accomplished like before, with two to four Trojan horse icons showing up in any position on the third column. The number of possible free spins remains the same as during the base game.

The bonus round continues until the remaining number of free spins has been reduced to zero. Players can be assured of getting a minimum of 10 spins, while a lucky few might reach the maximum of 130.

The multiway awards are still active during the free spin phase. Their payouts are the same as during the base game, though, so you won’t need to clutter your brain with an additional set of payouts.

However, the same can’t be said of the line awards that appear during the bonus spins. These totals vary from what’s found in the base game, so I’ve listed them below for your convenience.

  • Helen of Troy
  • This legendary beauty pays 5000 for five matches, 800 for four, 125 for three, and 10 for two.

  • Paris
  • This seducer of women pays 2000 for five matches, 500 for four, and 100 for three.

  • Menelaus
  • This vengeance-minded husband pays 1000 for five matches, 400 for four, and 75 for three.

  • Helmet & Sword of Achilles
  • These artifacts of war pay 500 for five matches, 100 for four, and 50 for three.

  • Ace & King
  • Pays 300 for five matches, 75 for four, and 15 for three.

  • Queen & Jack
  • Pays 150 for five matches, 50 for four, and 10 for three.

  • Treasure of Troy
  • This symbol is still wild, and it substitutes for the nine icons listed above. As always, it only appears on the second through fifth columns.

  • Trojan Horse
  • More free spins can be triggered by getting two or more of this symbol in the third column.

Conclusion

While the payback percentage on the Treasures of Troy slot machine might be slightly less than the average Vegas machine, it still offers a long-term profit by being available in the comfort of your own home. Add in a free spin bonus round, a 200,000 jackpot, and more than 1,024 ways to win, and you have a historic game that might rival Helen of Troy for the affections of modern man (or at least die-hard gamblers).
